SOFAR's Services

SOFAR coordinates the delivery of counseling and support services to families by licensed professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, psychopharmacologists, psychiatric nurses, and social workers. These volunteers lead family support sessions, provide individual counseling services, and refer family members to other licensed professionals outside the SOFAR network if additional assistance is required.

SOFAR volunteer clinicians are available to provide individual and family therapy and lead support groups targeted for families, mothers and parents while maintaining strict confidentiality. Support groups focus on such topics as stress management, anger management and general coping skills.

Endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, SOFAR volunteers place a particular emphasis on the needs of children, who are often ill-equipped to understand and cope with the temporary absence of a parent. Consistent with its commitment to helping children, SOFAR has published the SOFAR Guide For Helping Children and Youth Cope with the Deployment of a Parent in the Military Reserves.

We participate in Family Readiness Groups, and accept all invitations to speak to organizations for families and for returning vets. We plan to run workshops for teachers in dealing with children at high risk for trauma.

How to Begin

We have a dedicated phone line, 617 266-2611, where all extended family members can request services which are completely confidential and free of charge.

Once a family member requests services from SOFAR, the clinician will conduct an assessment and develop a treatment plan for the individual and/or family. The family member and the clinician will negotiate the duration and frequency of services to best meet the needs of the family with the resources SOFAR can provide. Should the family require additional community resources, the clinician will assist in making referrals to appropriate services.
